Pro-Ject Audio Systems has unveiled the latest refinement in its acclaimed AUTOMAT series with the arrival of the new A1.2 fully automatic turntable. Designed to replace the outgoing A1 as the gateway model to Pro-Ject’s line of automatic vinyl players, the A1.2 introduces several key upgrades aimed at enhancing both performance and user experience.
Visually, the A1.2 retains the minimalist and elegant aesthetic of its predecessor. However, it’s beneath the surface where the real upgrades lie. A notable update is the replacement of the original stamped steel platter with a new die-cast aluminium platter, which offers improved rotational stability and greater resistance to resonance. Pro-Ject has also refined its manufacturing process, tapping CNC machining for tighter tolerances and enhanced consistency in production quality.
The 8.3-inch aluminium tonearm returns but now features a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer headshell. This subtle yet significant change strengthens the headshell’s rigidity without adding unwanted mass—vital for the accurate operation of Pro-Ject’s fully mechanical automation system. The tonearm comes pre-fitted with the Pick it MM E cartridge, making the A1.2 truly plug-and-play right out of the box.
Staying true to its analog roots, Pro-Ject continues to use a purely mechanical, non-electronic automation system. There are no motors or sensors affecting the tonearm’s movement—once playback begins, the automation disengages entirely. The result? Pristine audio performance free from electrical interference or vibration-induced noise.
Production of the A1.2 is a collaborative effort, with German turntable specialists handling the automation mechanics and final assembly taking place at Pro-Ject’s Czech facility. This cross-border collaboration ensures the A1.2 is both high-performing and built to last, promising exceptional value within its price bracket.
Setting up the A1.2 is refreshingly simple. Factory-calibrated tracking force and anti-skating eliminate the need for complex adjustments. The pre-installed cartridge is aligned and mounted before shipping. To get started, users merely need to position the turntable on a flat surface, attach the dust cover, plug in the supplied power adapter, and choose whether to activate the integrated phono stage. Then it’s just a matter of placing a record, selecting the appropriate speed, and pressing Start. The tonearm automatically cues the record’s lead-in groove and lifts off at the end—no manual intervention required.
For those keen on visual variety, the A1.2 is now available in a striking new white finish, in addition to the classic black version. This gives listeners more flexibility in matching the deck to their home décor or hi-fi system aesthetics.
The Pro-Ject A1.2 is set to arrive in the UK and EU with a suggested retail price of £469 / €499. Launch details and pricing for other regions will be announced in due course.
With refined internals, a sleek finish, and truly automatic operation, the A1.2 cements Pro-Ject’s commitment to convenience without compromising sound quality—making it a compelling choice for both vinyl newcomers and audiophile purists alike.
